About UsThanks to the efforts of Father Michael J. McGivney, assistant pastor of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven and some of his parishioners, the Connecticut state legislature on March 29, 1882, officially chartered the Knights of Columbus as a
fraternal benefit society. The Order is still true to its founding principles of charity, unity and fraternity. The Knights was formed to render financial aid to members and their families. Mutual aid and assistance are offered to sick, disabled and needy members and their families. Social and intellectual fellowship is promoted among members and their families through educational, charitable, religious, social welfare, war relief and public relief works. |
Mission StatementThe Knights of Columbus, the world's largest lay Catholic organization, has remained true to its founding principles of Charity, Unity and Fraternity. On February 22, 1900 Patriotism was added as a
fourth principle. These principles constitute the First, Second, Third and Fourth Degree Exemplifications of the Knights of Columbus with the Fourth Degree being the highest attainable degree in the Order. All practical Catholic men 18 or older are welcome to join the Knights of Columbus and enhance their Catholic and Family values. The term “practical Catholic” implies that a person accepts and abides by the commandments of the Catholic Church. St. Mark's Star of the Sea Council #11374 was charted on June 17, 1994 and follows all the principles of the Order. |
